Joe: Do you smell that? That's the stench of Collins' play in the Summer League. Awful, awful, awful. Bit of a reach pick, in Joe's opinion, with a history of knee troubles. What does he do well? I think he's supposed to be a decent shooter for a big man, but my understanding was that he shies away from contact and isn't a great defender or rebounder. Might be my new whipping boy now that McIlvaine is headed out the door. But I am deeply confused. As a write this, Scott is in the paper raving about his improvement on the first 3 days of camp. He's from Stanford, so he must have done some serious studying since the Summer League. It would be my pleasure to have him turn out to be a player and show up my initial feelings. But right now I don't think so.

Champagne: We hear that Collins is challenging MacCulloch in training camp for the starting spot, just about sorta almost. Should that make us happy or make us sad? I've been pining for a more than marginally competent center for a very long time and this October I've been allowing myself to imagine that we've got one in MacCulloch. If we end up with two in one season, I may swoon. I hope he keeps the nappy afro. The Nets have been too uptight and not very visually stimulating.
