28, 2002 Mean Street In one season, the Nets went from hunter to hunted...here's where we're going to collect the tough talk, not only in regard to our Eastern Conference Champion belt-winners, but from and about all corners of the basketball universe All-Star Aftermath: Does Richard Jefferson Need to Keep His (Expletive) Mouth Closed? Richard Jefferson: "Without Amare [Stoudemire], Shawn Marion and Stephon Marbury would not be All-Stars. They've got similar numbers to last year, but they've got a beast down there who can get a double-double. Without him, they'd be a .500 team and they wouldn't be All-Stars." Stephon Marbury: "Richard Jefferson needs to really start keeping his mouth closed. He's all right. He's not a guy who is a dominant presence in this league, No. 1.No. 2, he's probably here [at the All-Star Weekend] because of the way they're playing. If he wasn't playing with Jason Kidd and the guys he's playing with, I don't think he'd be one of the guys you'd be looking to. He needs to start playing good on the road. There's a lot of things you can start saying about him. He needs to keep his (expletive) mouth closed if he's going to talk about somebody else's game. I don't like that. Don't speak on my game or somebody else's game, especially my teammate's game, when you ain't even really up to par yet. He's got to get his game up first before he starts talking that." - as quoted by Bob Young, Arizona Republic, February 8, 2003 "That Flashy Albino Pussy Who Always Failed in the Clutch" [Ed. Note: The excerpt below was pulled from page 11 of Hunter S. Thompson's autobiography, entitled Kingdom of Fear, recently (early January 2003) released in hardcover. Intentionally or not (we can't tell) HST misspells Van Horn as "Van Horne" and sends him from Philly to NJ, not the other way around.] "...that was a call from Newsweek in New York, asking what I thought about the 'shocking Mutombo-Van Horne trade' today, a major shift in the power balance of the NBA East that I was only vaguely aware of. It meant that the 76ers would be rid of that flashy albino pussy who always failed in the clutch. It made perfect sense to me, and that is why I picked up the telephone....What the hell? I thought. People ask me these questions because they know I am a famous sportswriter. 'The trade is meaningless,' I said. 'It is like trading a used mattress for a $300 bill.' And that was that, apparently. The writer was suddenly called away from his desk and hung up on me. So what? I thought. I didn't want to talk to him anyway." Woj Gongs Karl "Has the United States' basketball coach finally finished his soliloquy on the worst 48 hours in the nation's basketball history, his instructions for Americans from sea to shining sea to muster some perverse pride in the complete embarrassment of his lost cause at the World Championships? Someone, somewhere grab the microphone out of George Karl's face, drag his tired act out of Conseco Field House and spare us his ticker tape parade for losing to Pepe Sanchez and Belgrade Community College." - Adrian Wojnarowski on George Karl's "celebration of basketball" comments after USA's dismal 6th Place showing in the World Basketball Championship, ESPN.com, September 9, 2002 See Ya! "Sometimes it's difficult to live up to what everybody thinks of you. He's not Tim Duncan." - Byron Scott, speaking in praise of Keith Van Horn following his trade to the Sixers, August 6, 2002. Welcome to the Jungle "Allen said he needed two guys to score with him. Now, if he's willing to take 20 shots instead of 30 shots per game, there will be plenty of opportunities for other guys to do that." - Sixer Coach Larry Brown, speaking about Allen Iverson's desire for more scoring options, after the Sixers acquired Keith Van Horn, August 6, 2002. Success: The Best Revenge "Steph feels like he has something to prove. He'll never tell you this, but the success the Nets have had is driving him." - Suns GM Bryan Colangelo on Stephon Marbury, who had surgery to remove loose bodies in his left ankle after the season, then decided to have surgery to reduce swelling in his right ankle, and is rehabbing now.
