7, 2002 The Morgue NBA and New Jersey Nets news, chilled for saving. May 23, 2003 Cavs Get Top Pick in Draft The NBA Draft Lottery was held this evening before the Eastern Conference Finals Game 3. Here are the results: 1) Cleveland. LeBron James stays in Ohio. 2) Detroit (taking Memphis' pick). Looking to pick up Darko Milocic (from Serbia & Montenegro), according to David Aldridge of ABC-TV. 3) Denver 4) Toronto 5) Miami 6) Los Angeles Clippers 7) Chicago 8) Milwaukee (taking Atlanta's pick). 9) New York. Sorry Nicky Knicksfan, your bad luck continues. 10) Washington 11) Golden State 12) Seattle 13) Memphis 2002 World Basketball Championship - September 4, 2002 Argentina Destroys USA, Era Ends Latest Results Argentina defeats USA, 87 - 80, September 4, 2002. "We are human beings, and we dream." - Juan Ignacio "Pepe" Sanchez, Argentinian point guard par excellance, September 4, 2002 An era of unchallenged basketball dominance by the USA ended forever on Wednesday night, September 4, 2002. For the first time in history, across the span of 8 tournaments and 59 games, NBA players have been defeated by an international team. "I thought we took them lightly." - a stunned Baron Davis, Jason Kidd's stand-in, states the obvious, September 4, 2002 Yes, Netsfans, I saw history being made and I've yet to see a truly competitive US game. What I saw was a rapid, precise dissection by a tough, cohesive Argentinian strike team of a loosely structured gang of freelancing, frustrated NBAers. I watched an NBA team get their guts torn away by passes ripped down their middle. An NBA team that never led, collapsing in the second quarter into a 20 point hole. Panicked in the opening minutes by the Argentine's attack, USA tried tripping (Paul Pierce stuck his foot out for Hugo Sconochini), charging (you name the NBAer, they were called for the offensive foul) and even deliberately stomping them in frustration (O'Neal stepped on Luis Scola hard, in retaliation for a Scola block). Not to mention inevitable, and awfully off-course three point jacks they would only make it to within 6, in the third quarter, with this mess of an unplan. Coach George Karl gobbled the candy he kept in a plastic container set out on the press table and tried not to cry; assistant Coach Greg Popovich went batshit in the time-out huddles. If any US citizens had anything at all to gain by the outcome of this game, it was Popovich and the basketball fans of San Antonio. Two of the newest Spurs are coming from this team: the brilliant guard Emanuel Ginobili and scrappy forward Luis Scola. Add Detroit: Pepe Sanchez was later signed for a two-year deal to play the point for the Pistons. You want shocking lameness? The USA didn't get a fast-break point until there was less than two and-a-half minutes left in the game. Show-ups? It was an Argentine, Andres Noccioni, who had the most riveting monster slam of the contest. Bewilderment? FIBA rules say the ball is live once it touches the rim there are no "in the cylinder" infractions in the international game once that occurs and Argentina took brutal advantage, tearing American balls off the metal while our clueless jocks motioned desperately to the refs for interference calls. It's those balls we want back, Team USA, back in our wet palms not frozen to a board someplace in Tierra del Fuego, inside a smashed-in trophy case covered in obscene Spanish graffiti. Quickly, before they're hocked to bail out their economy, currently in a terminal dive. Bring back those balls Andre Miller, Reggie Miller, Shawn Marion, Paul Pierce, Ben Wallace, Antonio Davis, Baron Davis, Jay Williams, Jermaine O'Neal, Raef Lafrenz, Michael Finley, and Elton Brand. And you, Coach Karl. For shame. Bring us back the manhood you gave away, on your watch. Bring us the Gold! Champagne The USA would fail to do so, losing to Yugoslavia the next evening, 81 - 78, knocking themselves out of medal contention. Nets News - August 21, 2002 Exercising Kenyon The Nets announced today that they have exercised a fourth year option on the contract of forward Kenyon Martin, keeping Kenyon around at least until the 2003 - 2004 season. Nets News - August 9, 2002 Nets Preseason Schedule The Nets will open their seven game preseason schedule at the Pepsi Center in Albany, NY on October 9th, against Cleveland. Here's the rest of the schedule: October 11th vs. Phoenix at the Continental Arena, 7:30pm. October 15th vs. Boston at the Continental Arena, 7:30pm. NBA News - June 27, 2002 2002 Draft Results With the 24th pick in the 2002 NBA Draft, the New Jersey Nets picked Nenad Krstic, a center who plays for KK Partizan, Yugoslavia. He's one of six international players to be picked in the first round. But you won't be chanting "Go 'nad!" next season, or maybe any other: Steve Adamek and Liz Robbins explain why. Who'd the Nets pick at 54? Tamar Slay, a G/F from Marshall. Here are the 1st round draft results for the rest of the league: 1) Houston - Yao Ming, C, Shanghai Sharks, China. The Knicks traded Nene to Denver, along with Marcus Camby and Mark Jackson, for Antonio McDyess, 25th pick of this draft (Frank Williams), and a 2003 2nd round pick. The hated Knicks stole the story of this draft with this trade. Before the crowd of mooks in MSG were aware of the maneuverings for McDyess, they chanted "Fi-re Lay-den!" after David Stern announced the pick for Hilario. How deeply despised is Layden? During an interview with John Thompson in the second round, Layden failed to boo-proof himself by wearing an FDNY baseball cap with an "I Love NY" button attached to it. 8) LA Clippers - Chris Wilcox, F, University of Maryland. 9) Phoenix - Amare Stoudemire, F, Cypress Creek H.S., Orlando, FL. 10) Miami - Caron Butler, F, University of Connecticut. 11) Washington - Jared Jefferies, F, University of Indiana. 12) LA Clippers - Melvin Ely, F, Fresno State University. 13) Milwaukee - Marcus Haislip, F, University of Tennessee. 14) Indiana - Fred Jones, G, University of Oregon. 15) Houston - Bostjan Nachbar, F, Italian League player (Slovenian National). 16) Philadelphia* - Jiri Welsch, G, Olimpija Ljubjana, Slovenia (Czech National).
