Chris Childs – G
Known For: Defensive intensity, getting under other players' skin, erratic play, never met a shot he wouldn't take, making a career out of one good season, complaining to the referees, the pyscho factor inside his head.

The Real Deal: Has built a career out of peaks and valleys with his play. One minute he's harrassing the stuffing out of someone defensively, the next he's jacking some crazy-assed three from the fourth row. Brings veteran presence, defensive smarts and a lot of attitude and toughness with him on his second tour of duty with the Nets. An upgrade at the backup point guard spot, Childs can also see some spot time at the shooting guard. With this team, a little Childs can go a long way toward a successful season. And the less time he plays per game, the better things are going for the Nets.
Note: came to Nets camp with achilles tendinitis, but because he was also overweight and out-of-shape, he was suspended by Rod Thorn on October 22, 2002.

Joe's Take: Hated him the first time around. Flat out hated him as a Net, hated him even more as a Knick. Irrational hate built up from watching too many stupid shots, passes and turnovers while he was supposedly the "best Net" or "Most Valuable Net" during the '95 - '96 season. If nothing else, I need to get used to him being on our side again. Frankly, for what he is and what he brings, I begrudgingly look forward to his contributions this season. As the saying goes, he may be a pain in the ass, but he's our pain in the ass.

Champagne's Take: Hopefully the Nets' speed game will kill his desire to jaw with the refs. That is his most annoying trait. Second, and closely related to the first, is pouting. Will Childs' significantly dam the offensive flow during his 10 minutes per game with his harangues at the officials? Will Childs' kill the Nets' lauded chemistry the first time something doesn't go his way? I can see the towel draped over his head already. But who knows, maybe getting a role on a major Eastern Conference contender, near the end of his long career, will make him drop his bad habits (which we now know includes over-eating). He is fierce, and a good defender, which is what the '02 - '03 Nets are all about.
