Known For: Energetic, hard-working second-round pick out of USC. Multiple nicknames, red hair, injury-prone rookie season that seems to be spilling over into this year.
The Real Deal: Lost for long stretches due to injury in 2001 - 2002. Seems to bring energy off the bench, but little else. Works hard, supports the team, and he might even have game inside him, but we haven't seen much of it.
Joe's Take: Well, he's got the best nicknames on the Nets: "Carrot Top," the spin-off "1-800-CALL-ATT," and the classic "Veal." Scalabrine looked like he could contribute last year, then got injured and never recovered his poise. Can score, rebound and do the little things, but he's not a great defender and his footwork and coordination need improvement. I'd take him over Brandon Armstrong any day, but the Nets are chock full of forwards right now, so he's another one that might find himself confined to the injury list for long stretches this season.
Champagne's Take: Last year Joe pegged Scalabrine as a Michael Rapaport look-alike, and every since I can shake the equation in my mind. Since that's basically all I have to go on, I'd describe him as earnest, energetic and enthusiastic, the same qualities I'd describe in the guy who played the actor trying to get a part on TJ Hooker in "True Romance." Huge crowd favorite due to his hustle, big physique, red hair, and brilliant nickname. We don't know more about him because the Nets played largely injury-free last season, and I'm sorry Scalabrine, I hope you heal up, but I wouldn't mind if we didn't see much of you this season either.
