Game
82: Pacers 90, Nets 83 - April 16, 2003 No Risk, No Reward New! Byron Scott rested his starters in a meaningless game for NJ, and his bench did give the Indiana starters cause for some concern this game wasn't decided until the final minutes. Indiana takes the #3 seed, and New Jersey will now match up with Milwaukee in Round 1 of the playoffs. Joe reviews a game that managed to have some hot moments despite Scott's conservative approach including Jason Collins' flagrant 2 foul on Reggie Miller...Read on... Game 81: Hornets 87, Nets 74 - April 14, 2003 Swarmed The Nets had the flowers of an Atlantic Division title at their picking, with a win assuring New Jersey of a second consecutive divisional crown and keeping them in the race for the Eastern Conference's top seed. Instead, the Nets were swarmed by a more determined opponent, closing out their last home game with a loss that denies them a shot at the #1 seed...and could eventually lead to their slipping to third. Joe's mind is now poisoned, and doubts about the Nets' post-season success are pounding in his brain...Read on... Game 80: Nets 94, Raptors 86 - April 12, 2003 War Of Attrition It was like CNN reporting from Baghdad long after the shooting stopped, and was about as exciting as hearing the same sound bite for the 27th time in an hour. The Nets survive against the undermanned Raptors despite another fourth quarter drought and win a game they have to win behind RJ, KMart and JKidd to snap their unfathomable two game losing streak...Joe reports from the front lines... Game 79: Bulls 95, Nets 85 - April 11, 2003 24 The Nets once again commit their two biggest sins of the 2002 - 2003 season: forgetting to play more than 24 minutes, and sucking wind in the waning moments of tight fourth quarters. Despite acting like Kiefer Sutherland in the tv show "24", Kenyon Martin can't save the day for the confounding Nets, who lose to the Bulls and lose a chance to pick up ground on Detroit and Philadelphia...Joe has the review... Game 78: Hawks 97, Nets 92 - April 9, 2003 Power Outage The Nets (excepting Jason Kidd, who registered his 50th career triple double) fail to plug in until the last 10 minutes of this game, slipping into a 17-point 4th quarter hole before mounting an electric comeback that just fails to supply enough juice for a W...and if they want to regain the #1 seed in the East (they lost it back to the Pistons tonight), their margin of error has been reduced to zero...Read on... Game 77: Nets 96, Raptors 87 - April 6, 2003 Air Time The Nets get a boost from the return of Kenyon Martin and Lucious Harris and survive the exploits of Vince "Air Apparent" Carter...Read on... Game 76: Nets 99, Heat 83 - April 4, 2003 Dust My Broom A little spring cleaning for NJ, as the Nets sweep their season series with the Miami Heat for the first time ever. Game 75: Hornets 106, Nets 97 - April 2, 2003 Hostile Takeover A coup in the boardroom, with Baron Davis (19 points, 7 assists in only 3 quarters) leading the hostile takeover of the Nets with slick moves, smooth shooting and lots of glasswork in a corporate victory over NJ...Read on... Game 74: Nets 110, Rockets 86 - March 31, 2003 Movin' On Up Richard Jefferson and Jason Kidd help the Nets move back on up to that deluxe apartment of a four game winning streak. Yao Ming makes like Wilt Chamberlain early, but the Nets easily make up for the absence of Kenyon Martin and Lucious Harris. George Jefferson would be proud...Read on... Game 73: Nets 109, Warriors 97 - March 29, 2003 March Madness The Nets play a bracket buster with the Warriors on a March night in which everything is madness. Mutombo returns, Martin and Kittles get injured and Kidd dunks a basketball before the Nets finally gut-check a win in a tight fourth quarter for their third straight win...Read on... Game 72: Nets 122, Knicks 101 - March 28, 2003 Jefferson For President! Richard Jefferson throws his hat in the ring and slams the ball through the hoop scoring a career-best 39 points. The Nets shoot hot (61.7%), distribute (16 assists for Kidd), and slam-dunk the Knicks out of the primaries (68 Nets points in the paint on a variety of thrilling 'oops and reverse-slams). It's the Nets over the Knicks in a landslide...Read on... Game 71: Nets 101, Knicks 95 - March 26, 2003 Kidd's Closers The bruised and battered Nets relearn their fourth-quarter ABCs: Always Be a Closer. An exciting, contentious game that was tied at the end of 3 and out came the Nets with smooth-talking shot-making, and non-stop in-your-pocket defense to get the Knicks signing checks for the Nets' gain. Kerry Kittles earns the gold watch for scoring 23 points to Allan Houston's 19, and holding Houston to zero points in the fourth...Read on... Game 70: Cavs 93, Nets 88 - March 23, 2003 Birthday Bomb An utter calamity in Cleveland. Jason Kidd, on his 30th birthday, desperately attempts to liven up his own party...and turns it over across the endline with 15 seconds left and the Nets down by 2. The Nets had one good quarter the first and they were done, their party crashed by Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who nobody could keep out of the lane...Read on... Game 69: Nets 107, Grizzlies 99 - March 22, 2003 Saturday Night Live On Saturday night Guest Host Jason Kidd made sure every "Not Ready for Playoff-Time" Nets player shined in the spotlight, handing out a season-high 18 assists. The Grizz three-bombed their way back into this, reducing a 21-point hole to only 10, but the Nets kept producing good material all the way to the end of the show. At last: we thought we'd never laugh again...Read on... Game 68: Bucks 104, Nets 85 - March 19, 2003 Easy Marks Witnessing this game was kind of like walking through Old New York City (circa 1978) with your father, and watching him get taken by a cups-and-balls operator on 7th Avenue. It's depressing when illusions peel away: suddenly Dad doesn't seem so together. And neither do the Nets. Tied at the end of three, in the first five minute of the fourth quarter the Bucks went on a 15 - 2 run. In the fourth the Nets would turn the ball over 7 times (on their way to a season-high 27 turnovers for the game), and only score 12 points. Another costly tight-game flub...Read on... Game 67: Nets 87, Celtics 74 - March 18, 2003 Brothers In Arms Little Brother Richard Jefferson and Big Brother Kenyon Martin combine to score 49 points that's 56% of the Nets offense. Deadly duo Walker and Pierce? A mere 37 points. Boston's 3-point Scud-shooting? They hit only 1 out of 21. A strong divisional victory for the Nets...Read on... Game 66: Sixers 92, Nets 87 - March 16, 2003 Stolen Promises The Sixers steal the ball from the Nets 16 times, steal this game in the second half, and abscond with the Nets' mojo. Kidd Koughs it up 12 times! DC is dastardly grabbing Kenyon's uni! The lights go out in the Nets' house they fail to hit a single field goal in the last 9 minutes! And the Sixers take the season series...Read on... Game 65: Nets 90, Celtics 75 - March 13, 2003 Never Satisfied Kenyon Martin writes the rallying cry for the last games of the regular season on both of his socks: "Never Satisfied." Game 63: Rockets 83, Nets 71 - March 8, 2003 Dead Men Walking The Nets, imprisoned by their own violent incompetence, scored a franchise record low for a quarter with 8 points in the second, and a franchise record low for a half with 24 points in the first, before going toes-up and getting tossed in Potter's Field. The Nets drop to 0 - 3 in Texas, with the hangman's rope swinging for Passenger Byron Scott...Read on... Game 62: Spurs 92, Nets 78 - March 6, 2003 Choose Your Own Misadventure Champagne lets you pick your own late-game strategy...or just leave it up to the players to vote on. Heck, Byron seems to like to! A high-speed disaster in which the Nets get out-played every quarter, Kidd gets out-played by Tony Parker, Emanual Ginobili nearly out-plays the Nets' bench, and Byron Scott (presumably) draws up a three-point attempt late in the game...for Kenyon Martin...Read on... Game 61: Mavericks 88, Nets 79 - March 4, 2003 Fractured Fairy Tales If the Nets have a Fairy Godmother, then her magic wand isn't functioning. Heck, it didn't look like the Nets had much of a point guard tonight either...Steve Nash outplayed Kidd, and the Nets squandered a fine defensive performance (+17 in the rebounding column, holding Finley and Nowitzki's scoring down for most of the game) by turning the ball over 23 times to the Mavericks' 9...the Nets turn into pumpkins again in a tight, late-game situation...Read on... Game 60: Jazz 91, Nets 90 - March 2, 2003 It's NetsNuts' World, Joe's Just Living In It Joe witnesses the final play of the game unfolding directly in front of his eyes: the Stockton baseline jumper, the Kirilenko tip-in at the buzzer. Game 57: Magic 113, Nets 105 - February 23, 2003 "State Of Funk" Byron Scott says his Nets are in a "state of funk." Not the kind Joe usually "digs." Hear this: Two superstars get triple doubles, there are 4 Kidd-to-Martin alley-oops, McGrady scores 46 points, the Nets put on a freakishly productive display of backcourt pressure in the third quarter and stage a comeback from having been down by 15, but then get no points for the first 6 minutes of the fourth...while Garrity and McGrady score 17. Funky indeed. Read on... Game 56: Wizards 89, Nets 86 - February 21, 2003 Crossing Jordan Netsfans bear witness to the Greatest Performance By A 40-Year Old Ever. Game 54: Nets 84, Heat 79 - February 18, 2003 Personal Valet This is the kind of game where Joe likes to lie back, close his eyes and tinkle a bell, expecting his Nets to serve up a win post haste. The Nets end up having to scramble, but Joe gets his home win...Read on...
