Joe Netsfan in the News
Some links to news quotes by Joe Netsfan (aka Mike Kozlowski) and Champagne (aka Shawn Belschwender).
January 27, 2004
The day GM Rod Thorn fired head coach Byron Scott was also the day after Joe Netsfan held a "Keep the Nets in NJ" rally in the CAA parking lot.

Filip Bondy (NY Daily News) paints Joe Netsfan as a Don Quixote figure (Champagne has certainly been his Sancho Panza). Joe: "I've got to have a windmill to tilt at somewhere. This could be my windmill." Bondy: "Kozlowski was chased from the front of the arena by a Meadowlands official, then set up outside a fence in the parking lot. Crowds were walking right past him, toward Nets-Celtics. It was freezing cold out here, frigid enough to deter any fainthearted demonstrator. Finally, a group of about 30 people gathered with Kozlowski, chanting nasty things about Lewis Katz and nice things about New Jersey for about 20 minutes."

Tom Canavan (Associated Press) quotes Joe at his "Keep the Nets in NJ" rally before Sunday's game against Boston: "Until they tell me this is not going to go through, that's how long I'll be out here. Anybody who is willing to keep the Nets in New Jersey is my friend." Canavan ends his piece with a quote from a melancholy Netsfan. Joe himself: "Kozlowski and his fellow demonstrators plan to work against the move, which could not happen for at least three seasons at the earliest. However, Kozlowski feels other forces may be at work even though the team has finally turned things around after decades of struggle by winning consecutive Eastern Conference titles. 'At the end of the day, maybe this franchise is cursed,' Kozlowski said."

Jay Greenberg (NY Post) quotes Joe on his "Keep the Nets in NJ" dream: "There are enough people who feel like me. Whether they will support this, I can't say."

Bill Handleman (Asbury Park Press) calls joenetsfan.com "worthwhile" in a piece on the rally, spiced with liberal quotes from Joe Netsfan. Here're some: "I'll be here until they tell me this thing is over." "It's hard to get here, and it's unaffordable for the average fan. Forty-five dollars gets you a seat in the upper level, in the corners usually. Why haven't people come? Because of Katz."

Jon Lane (YES Network) quotes Joe Netsfan on the difficulty of keeping the Nets home in New Jersey “This is what this whole thing is about, staying out of Brooklyn. Ultimately, I think it comes down to ticket prices, and it being hard to get here and making it unaffordable for the average fan is taking its toll. You finally get a (winning) team in here and you can’t get people to show up."

Brian Lewis (NY Post) quotes a rallyin' Joe: "My site has become a place for the fans to have a voice. Since there's no other place for the fans to have a voice to keep the Nets in Jersey, I've taken up the cause. [...] We've got to try to continue to get support from Nets fans, which isn't easy, considering the history of Nets fans."

Adam Lisberg (Bergen Record) has a rally story highlighting Joe Netsfan's largesse: "The ralliers parted to let a van drive through to the handicapped parking lot. When the van was gone, the demonstrators left as well, setting their signs in a white box and heading for the gate. 'Hey guys, you don't have to give back the signs – take 'em!' Kozlowski shouted to his fellow ralliers through a bullhorn. "Take the signs. Take the stickers. Hey, don't take the hat. Hey – that's my hat!" Let go of Joe's hat!

Steve Politi (Newark Star-Ledger) quotes rally organizer Joe Netsfan: "I'll be lucky to get enough people here to stand for 15 minutes for a nice photo op." He fought The Man all afternoon. That's Joe's job! "'Come on!' the Waldwick resident yelled as the fans hurried past him toward the warmth of Continental Airlines Arena. 'You're not going to get in trouble. I'm the one going to jail, not you guys.'" More Joe, as he walked to his seat: "The signs were confiscated at the gate. The security guy told me, 'No signs about the sale are allowed in the building.' I have no idea if I'll get them back. Nice, eh?"
