Chicago Bulls
(20 - 50) - Tuesday, March 23, 2004, 8:30PM EST - United Center American Idle Once America's Team (actually, Michael Jordan's), the Bulls have been reduced to an American Idol-type roster of 10-day tryouts as the early hope of success has been replaced by the swan song of dispair. Fellows like Linton Johnson III, Paul Shirley and Jannero Pargo have been signed while Rick Brunson and Corey Blount have been let go as the Bulls' genial hosts, GM Jim and coach Scott Skiles, look for talent and attitude to improve Chicago's fortunes for next season as they fight Orlando for the worst record in the NBA. The Nets are one injury away from a Gong Show roster themselves, having signed point guard Anthony Goldwire to a 10-day contract to replace the injured Jason Kidd. Will the Nets collect a much-needed win by leaving it all on the stage in Chicago? Or will the shaky Bulls act like Simon for one night and humiliate the talent-rich but health-poor Nets? - Joe Chicago Bulls Cheat Sheet The Story From Chicago: The Bulls, fresh off two straight wins (before losing last night to Indiana), are starting to feel good about themselves as they play out the string and prepare for next season. Roman Modrowski (Chicago Sun-Times) quotes vet Antonio Davis: ''To me, [these games] count for something,'' Antonio Davis said. ''To me, they signify that we understand that we went through some things, and we don't have a great record and aren't a very good team, but we didn't give up. We continued to try to learn until they told us to stop. ''In some ways, they may be meaningless because we don't have a chance to play in the playoffs, but if we approach it that way, I don't think it's fair to the fans, to management and to each other. I think it's important that we go out and at least put forth the effort.'' Davis said there's a difference with this late-season success. ''These guys won down the stretch last year because they were tired of losing, so they went out and played their tails off,'' Davis said. ''But this time, I really feel they know how to play and know how to win and are doing things we're practicing, so winning is becoming a habit. ''With the way we're going to approach the summer and come in for training camp, fans should be excited.'' Pain Game: F Marcus Fizer (ankle), F Scottie Pippen (knee) and G Chris Jeffries (back) are on injured reserve. F Jerome Williams (toe) and F Tyson Chandler (back) are listed as questionable.
