Nicknames: "The French Net"? "Couldn't Carry JKidd's "Jacque Vaughn? Jacque "Cousteau" Vaughn? Geez, if I didn't know any better I'd say he wasn't getting much love from Netsfans (and really, making him into a Frenchman is low...). More nicknames here.

Jacque Vaughn –G
Known For: Steady hand at the wheel. Won't give you much excitement but won't make too many mistakes. Better defender than shooter or scorer. Coachable.

The Skinny: The latest backup point guard to attempt to give Jason Kidd
some rest during games, now finds himself in the starter's role until Kidd returns. That may be asking a bit much, but ol' Jock, I mean Jacque, will do what he can to steady the ship. Don't look for no-look passes or high wire, almost-out-of-control fast breaks a la Kidd, though. Any offense he provides will be a plus, but he can stick to his man and help out on defense. But really, seriously - he's better than Robert Pack or Chris Childs. He just ain't no Kidd. French Vanilla, is more like it.

The Concern: Sink or swim? Can Jacque Vaughn supply capable, error-free piloting skills of the Nets' already challenged offense? Will he fit into the Nets' system of motion? Granted, the offense isn't set up to need a strong point guard, but look at how it flows when Kidd is running things. The Nets need a steady, half-court offense out of Vaughn, plus defense and whatever else he can contribute. After all, sans Kidd, Travis Best is too small, and Zoran Planinic is still too raw. So, it may be Vaughn or bust.

Joe's World View: Candidly, I have never had much use for Vaughn and his skills during his time at Kansas or in the NBA. Let's just say I was a wee bit skeptical that the Nets decided to spend their money on this guy, when other options were avaiable. Not sure how he'll turn out, but I'm starting to see the genius of Rod Thorn at work here. By getting a player who can back up Jason Kidd and not detract from the offense with stupid mistakes, it might just be the first time in the Kidd era that the Nets have a steady hand in the game when the master is not. Unfortunately, the downside of the plan is if Kidd does not return to the lineup for a long stretch. No matter what, you don't want Vaughn burning up major minutes. If so, the Nets are cooked.

Joe's Prediction: 3.0 PPG, 1.5 Rebounds, 3.5 Assist, 1 steal and 15 minutes per game averages.
