Golden State Warriors (19 - 23) - Wednesday, January 24, 2007, 10:30PM EST - Oracle Arena
Nelly, Not Smelly, Ball
Listen, you purposely acquire Stephen Jackson, and something must be wrong in your house...but here everyone is, raving about how Don Nelson, coach of the erstwhile Warriors, now has the (problem) children to play "Nellyball". It's fast and furious, it relies on more offense to be your defense, and with young guns like Jackson (that's ironic), Al Harrington (both acquired last week from the Pacers for Troy Murphy and Mike Dunleavy, plus some throw-ins), Baron Davis (should work out great with Jackson), Mickael Pietrus, Monta Ellis (candidate for most improved, and now probably 6th Man of the Year) and Jason Richardson, who's out injured. They're young and they're not being asked to play defense, so watch out...Still, when Jackson, who is facing prison time for his stupid gun tricks, is the guy you trade for to make things go, something smells. The Nets? Well, their fourth quarter behavior stuck up Sacramento, and a bad loss still lingers in the air like some sort of funky bleu cheese, but hopefully, Carter and co. can snap out of it long enough to slow down the Warrior express...
Why
Should You Watch? Well, it'll likely be up-and-down, up-and-down, all night long. Worth staying up until 1AM EST? You judge. Vince Carter needs some sort of redemption, even if he'll be the most marked man in the NBA for the next six weeks (hey, Dwyane Wade's managed to cope...). Jason Kidd, back home, always a good story with hopefully a happy ending. Baron Davis has been on his best behavior, sort of, since Nelly took over. Local boy Troy Murphy is gone, replaced by local boy Al Harrington. And Don Nelson, brilliant basketball innovator (offense) vs. L. Frank, defensive mastermind...nevertheless, Nelly looks like a fat, semi-drunken tourist who wandered on to an NBA sideline, which always gives Joe a chuckle (remember his days with the Knicks?).

The Story From Oakland : From
the San Francisco Chronicle: Guard Stephen Jackson likely will miss Friday's practice for a court appearance in Rochester Hills, Mich., where he faces charges of violating probation of his sentence in the 2004 Palace brawl. Jackson picked up new charges for firing a weapon outside an Indianapolis strip club in October and is scheduled to stand trial there Feb. 12. He faces a maximum of 93 days in prison if convicted on the probation-violation charge, but his lawyer, James Burdick, expects Jackson to be vindicated on all accounts. "Let me put it this way: Nothing is a given, but I would be very surprised if he's found guilty or sent to jail," Burdick said Tuesday.
Briefly: Baron Davis is listed as a game-time decision following Monday's bout with a leg cramp. He left the game with 4:44 remaining when his left calf tightened on a spin move and subsequent jumper. Davis, who has been dealing with family issues in Los Angeles, was excused from practice Tuesday.
Pain Game: G Baron Davis (left calf) is a game-time decision. G Jason Richardson (fractured finger) and C Zarko Cabarkapa (back surgery) are on the IL. C Nenad Krstic (knee) and F Richard Jefferson (ankle) are on the IL for the Nets.
