1991 - 1992 Young Guns Number 2
Kenny Anderson drafted, another great hope first round pick. Misses beginning of the season, team loses 18 of first 25 games. But they finish 39 – 43 on the strength of Coleman and Petrovic, who is becoming an outside shooting force in the league, and make the playoffs. Lose to the Cavaliers in the first round, but at least they don’t get swept.
1992 - 1993 The Daly Years
Fitch out, Chuck Daly hired. Blaylock traded (for Rumeal Robinson, one all-time great fleecing of the Nets) to open the point guard spot for Anderson. Anderson promptly gets hurt and misses almost half the season. Nets qualify for the playoffs. Again, the injury curse takes its toll: Anderson, Bowie, Chris Dudley all miss the playoffs as the Nets lose to Cleveland 3 – 2 in the first round. After the season, Petrovic is killed in an automobile accident, another in a long line of unfair things to happen to the franchise.
1993 - 1994 Why Can't This Team Win a Playoff Series?
The aftermath of the Petrovic loss hangs over the team as Coleman and Anderson make the All Star team, the team finishes 45 – 37 and makes the playoffs, but can’t beat a Knicks team that is headed for the finals and lose in 4 games. Daly decides he’s had enough, time for another in a series of bad coaching choices: Butch Beard.
1994 - 1995 Why Can't This Team Pick a Coach?
Whoop-de-damn-doo indeed. Injuries and attitude (not to mention another bad draft – Yinka Dare as the #1 pick? A performing seal would have been a better choice...) ruin another season. Dare plays a ridiculous 3 minutes in the ENTIRE season. Beard has no handle on the personalities of this team, and Joe Netsfan personally spends much time screaming from his seat at the ineptitude.
1995 - 1996 You Traded for This Guy?
Although this IS the NBA, taller does not necessarily equal better. Nets trade Coleman (and others) for 7 foot 6 inch Shawn Bradley (and others) in perhaps the worst trade the Nets have ever made (though Coleman had worn out his welcome). Anderson is then traded to Charlotte for Kendall Gill (this is a much better deal, although Anderson still hasn’t played up to his HS and college potential). Big deal, same 30 win season as the year before, Beard is (mercifully) relieved of his duties, and the Nets reach out to a young college savior, John Calipari.
